Canva preserved editable elements, but it didn’t preserve my edit boundary. After three completed changes, the account hit its monthly AI limit, so the six-change test stopped halfway.You probably know this revision loop. A poster looks almost done, then someone asks for one small change. The real question isn’t whether AI can redesign it. It’s whether AI can leave everything else alone.I froze seven fields before touching the posterThis was a change-control test. I used one fictional event poster with seven fields: title, date, CTA, central subject, palette, background, and layout. None matched every constraint. Every round had one instruction, and I opened the first candidate Canva returned. No rerolling. No choosing the version that made the tool look smarter.The lineage stayed in one Canva AI thread. Each chosen candidate opened as its own Canva design, where I could select text groups and graphic elements separately. That produced 21 real checks out of the planned 42.The requested edits worked. So did the collateral damageRound 1 took about 12 seconds. Canva changed the title to LATE MARKET, exactly as requested. The paper lantern and CTA remained. The date didn’t.That missing line was easy to spot. A quieter problem sat underneath it: spacing and layout shifted because an entire content block had disappeared. The design was still editable, but the poster was no longer semantically complete.Round 2 took about 25 seconds. I asked for one central-subject swap, from the lantern to a citrus soda can. Canva made the swap, and the can remained a separate design element.Then the date came back.It also added multiple text blocks, shapes, and layout elements. One instruction had become a broader reinterpretation. If this were a client poster, I’d now be checking copy that nobody requested.Round 3 took about 27 seconds. The forest-green and cream palette arrived. The title, date, CTA, and soda can remained available as separate elements in the editor.But the extra content from Round 2 disappeared, and the composition simplified again. And because a later round sometimes reversed earlier drift, reviewing only the latest poster would erase the history of how it got there.The poster stayed editable. Seven of the 21 field checks recorded unrequested changes.That count includes related effects, such as a missing date and the resulting layout shift, so it isn’t seven unique disasters. It is still too much drift for a “change only” workflow.Editability and control are different promisesI could keep working with every chosen design. The adopted base and the first candidate from each completed round opened as four editable Canva documents. Text, imagery, and design groups were selectable rather than flattened into one exported image.That’s useful. It means a human can recover from drift without rebuilding the poster from a JPEG. If your goal is exploration, editable candidates make the AI output a workable starting point.But editability doesn’t make the changes controlled. A designer still has to compare versions, recheck locked copy, and notice which elements quietly returned or disappeared.This is where “looks editable” can create false confidence. You can click the title, move the can, and restyle a shape. Meanwhile, the date may be missing, and three fresh copy blocks may have arrived.The unit of review has to be the whole poster. Checking only the requested element would have marked every completed round as a success. The seven-field audit told a different story.So the first handoff question isn’t “Can I edit this?” Ask: “What changed since the last approved version?”The quota became part of the workflowThe quota changed the workflow before it changed the bill. The three generations took about 64 seconds combined, excluding the time spent opening candidates and checking elements. New spend remained USD 0.00.After Round 2, Canva warned that the monthly AI allowance was nearly gone. Round 3 completed, then the interface said the plan’s monthly AI usage limit had been reached and would reset on September 1.I stopped there. I didn’t select the option to increase the limit, and I didn’t switch accounts. The CTA, texture, and final layout rounds were never submitted.That leaves the title question partly open. I can say the first three designs remained editable. I can’t say the poster survived six changes. The unfinished half is evidence too, especially if you’re planning a revision-heavy workflow around a limited allowance.For production planning, the limit changes the economics even when the invoice stays at zero. A chain can stop between stakeholder notes. Your design may remain recoverable, but your AI revision path may not.My editable-poster handoff checkI’d use Canva AI for branching, then tighten the process before approval. Once wording or placement becomes contractual, I’d duplicate the last approved design and treat every AI revision as a new candidate requiring a full comparison.My five-item check is simple:Lock the copy. List every title, date, CTA, and required line before the next prompt.Duplicate the approved version. Keep a recoverable state outside the active AI branch.Audit the whole canvas. Compare content, subject, palette, background, and layout after each change.Verify real editability. Select the text and graphic groups in the editor instead of trusting the preview.Watch the allowance. Don’t begin a six-step chain if the account can only finish three.The useful result wasn’t a perfect poster. It was a clear operating rule: editable output can save a rebuild, but it can’t replace version control.And if a one-line request keeps rewriting approved parts, stop prompting.
