Meta’s AI glasses have all sorts of alleged use cases. The real use case is the market of creeps and weirdos who film people out and about without their consent. And Meta knows for a fact this is the market: [Meta] Beginning with our second generation of glasses, the camera is automatically disabled if we detect that the capture LED has been blocked. No photos or videos can be taken until we detect that the light is unblocked. Since the introduction of this safeguard, we’ve seen some people go beyond using tape to sophisticated efforts to modify or destroy the capture LED. We are continuously improving our ability to detect tampering. But there is no other mass market for these things. There’s whole communities of these guys. And Meta is now in an arms race with its actual paying customers. [Reddit] When the creeps are mentioned, Meta likes to invoke disabled users as human shields. Vision assistance is a real use case. But also, that’s not the market for the glasses — it’s a side effect nobody involved cared about. There are not enough vision-impaired users for Meta to keep the back-end AI servers switched on. You use the glasses, you’ve put your eyeballs on a short-term rental. Beware. [Meta] But it gets better! Meta’s planning a new version of the glasses that records continuously! [FT, archive] a new hardware line of smart glasses that would continuously record audio while taking photos every few seconds. And they won’t have a recording light. This decree comes right from the top: executives are currently planning not to activate the LED when the super-sensing features are being used. The creeps are just the funding source for the AI glasses project. The purpose is to generate training data. Zuckerberg wants normal people recording their lives to feed his AI. That’s why Zuckerberg was telling us last August to get into his creepshot glasses or be left behind! And that’s why Meta’s running a celebrity sponsorship with Kylie Jenner to put a fashionable face on creeps. [Meta] Meta says straight up that everything you do that has Meta on the backend is training material. It’s in the privacy policy: [Facebook] To train effective models to unlock these advancements, a significant amount of information is needed. This is why we draw from the sources of training data listed above. There’s a UK Parliament petition to “Introduce an immediate ban on the sale and promotion of smart glasses”. If you’re in the UK, you might want to sign it. [UK Parliament] Video — Podcast
