The UK Government will speed up justice — with AI! UK police will take evidence in criminal cases and … run it through the chatbot. [Gov.UK] Under current rules, police have to analyse each piece of evidence themselves before disclosing it to the defence. The Home Office will: allow the use of AI to turbocharge how evidence is reviewed. Police will run the claimed evidence through the chatbot and hand the defence a list of hallucinations. The National Police Chiefs’ Council says: Good disclosure practice is essential for the fair and impartial investigation that is needed to ensure a fair trial. But that’s fine! Because the government also wants to take away the right to a jury trial. [BBC] When the government says “turbocharge”, they mean an efficient pipeline from arrest to jail, without all that tedious red tape. The new AI evidence rules come with the Home Office-funded “PoliceAI.” Their use cases are increased surveillance and automated CCTV and facial recognition. [UK Police] In June, a Derbyshire police officer was put under criminal investigation, allegedly making up evidence with a chatbot. Multiple rape cases might be affected.
