It wasn’t an isolated move. Weeks earlier, Norway’s government had already barred AI tools for children in grades 1 through 7, ages 6 to 13, with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre putting it plainly: the priority is making sure kids still learn to read, write, and do mathematics without leaning on a machine to do it for them.Sitting in a room yesterday with colleagues spanning generations, from Gen Z to Gen X, I watched this same debate play out in miniature. Everyone had a point. Nobody fully agreed. That, it turns out, is also the story playing out at a global scale.Three Very Different BetsGovernments are currently placing three different bets on what protects children best.The first is the precautionary block. Norway, New York City, France, and Los Angeles have all restricted AI for younger students, pairing it with stricter screen time limits and, in Norway’s case, a return to physical textbooks. The logic: young children need to build foundational skills the slow way before software starts doing the thinking for them.The second is the integrationist bet. The UAE mandates AI lessons from kindergarten. Poland is opening AI labs in schools, arguing that children should learn to direct the technology rather than avoid it. For these countries, early fluency is treated as a basic modern skill, not a risk.The third, less visible trend is a broader digital backlash. Sweden has banned smartphones outright in compulsory schools. Australia has banned social media for under-16s. AI restrictions are arriving alongside a wider rethink of how much screen time childhood should include at all.The Room Full of Parents Doesn’t Agree EitherThe parents in these debates aren’t a united front. Some are relieved, hoping fewer screens means more room for boredom, play, and the kind of original thinking that comes from being stuck without an easy answer. Others are wary of ed-tech companies treating classrooms as a data-mining opportunity.But a third group worries about the opposite problem: that banning AI at school just pushes it home, unsupervised, where nobody is teaching kids to use it well. Research on this “rat race” dynamic is telling: even parents who support a ban in principle often let their kids use AI at home anyway, afraid their child will fall behind peers who are already using it.That fear isn’t unfounded. National data suggests around 84% of students already use AI for schoolwork, regardless of what their school’s policy says.What the Teenagers Actually ThinkRecent Pew Research Center findings point to a real perception gap between generations. About 64% of teenagers report using AI chatbots regularly, but only around half of parents believe their kids are using them at all. Nearly four in ten parents say they’ve never once discussed AI with their child.Teens themselves are split too. A majority think AI could help their learning, and many use it to research topics, work through math problems, or summarize long material. But surveys also show real skepticism among the same students about what AI is doing to their thinking long-term. Older teenagers, in particular, are frustrated that policies like NYC’s leave high schoolers out of the conversation entirely, treating them, as one youth activist group put it, as subjects of an experiment rather than participants in one.One detail from the data stayed with me: a notable share of teenagers use AI companion chatbots not for homework, but for emotional support and casual conversation, at meaningfully higher rates among some demographic groups than others. Whatever a ban decides about essays and equations, it doesn’t touch that use case. It just moves it further out of sight.No Clean AnswerWhat struck me most, both around that table and in these reports from around the world, is that nobody in this debate is wrong exactly. The Boomers and Gen Xers worried about kids losing the capacity to struggle through a problem have a point backed by real research. The Gen Z colleagues who already use AI daily and don’t see the harm have a point too, because that’s simply the world they’re studying and will soon work in.I sit somewhere in between, and I don’t think that’s a compromise so much as it is experience talking. I’ve watched technology move from no phone at all to a smartphone in every pocket, from bulky desktop computers to a MacBook thin enough to slide into a bag.Each shift felt disruptive in its moment, and each one settled into something we now can’t imagine living without. I rely on both instincts: the caution that says slow down and protect the fundamentals, and the pragmatism that says this technology isn’t going away, so we had better learn to use it well.Governments are running the experiment in real time, in opposite directions, on the same age group. Norway is betting on restraint. The UAE is betting on immersion. Somewhere between the two, an entire generation of parents, teachers, and teenagers is trying to figure out, table by table, meeting by meeting, what actually helps a child grow up thinking for themselves.
